10. Martin Luther King Jr.

following King's death.

(e) On August 28, 1963, King delivered a stirring address to an audience of more than 2,00,000 civil rights supporters.

(f) He was assassinated in Memphis by a sniper on April 4.

(g) As a result of King's effectiveness as a leader of the American civil rights movement and his highly visible moral courage he was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize for peace.

(h) In the early 1960s King led SCLC in a series of protest campaigns that gained national

attention.

16. Who Will Bell the Cat?

(a) On a fixed day, the mice met in a meeting to find a way out.

(d) There lived some mice in a farmer's barn happily.

(e) Different mice gave different opinions but all of them were unacceptable.

(f) The farmer was in a trouble with the mice and brought a cat in order to get rid of them.

(g) Hearing the question, all began to look at one another in frustration.

(h) He proposed to tie a bell around the neck of the cat.

(i) As a result, the mice were in danger to come out of their holes.

(j) An old mouse accepted the proposal and asked "But who will bell the cat?"

17. Robert Bruce

(a) Once while lying in the cave, he saw a spider trying hard to reach the ceiling of the cave.

(b) But it did not give up hope.

(c) The spider failed again and again.

(d) Bruce saw the spider climbing to the ceiling after some unsuccessful attempts.

(e) He gathered an army of strong men and attacked his enemies and regained his kingdom.

(f) This dauntless spider inspired Bruce to shake off the darkness of despair.

(g) The king fought bravely but lost the battle.

(h) Once enemies invaded the kingdom of Robert Bruce.

(i) Fleeing from his kingdom, he took shelter in a cave.

(j) The king was always in a gloomy state for his unhappy condition.

18. Uncle Tom's Cabin

(a) Uncle Tom's wife, Aunt Chole was a good-natured woman.

(b) It was near their master's house.

(c) They lived happily in their little cottage.

(d) He was honest, faithful and efficient in his work.

(b) This was the first time that a student was granted a French scholarship in mime.

(c) He performed in a number of television shows in Bangladesh and gained popularity.

(d) In 1981, the French Government offered him a scholarship so that he could get professional training in mime.

(e) Partha Pratim Majumder is the first Bangladeshi to take up mime as a profession.

(f) Majumder started his training under the legendry maestro, Etiene Decroux.

(g) In his mime, Majumder depicted the day-to-day life of the people.

(h) Mr. Moreau noticed the talent in Majumder.

(e) But, the spider did not give up the struggle.

(f) But, he once lost his kingdom to England in a battle with British forces.

(g) It was trying to reach the ceiling but, each time it tried, it dropped again.

(h) He fought with the English for his country for a long time, but he failed.

(i) Robert Bruce was the king of Scotland and he was a gallant soldier.

(j) It tried again and at last reached its goal.

24. The Martyrdom of Dr. Zoha

(a) At one point, Dr. Zoha was shot in the back at 11 in the morning and breathed his last at 4 pm.

(b) They started taking up their positions against the students.

(c) The students were preparing to violate section 144.

(d) On February 17, Section 144 was imposed on Rajshahi City.

(e) On hearing this, Professor Zoha, a famous teacher of Rajshahi University rushed to the spot.

(f) The armed forces were deployed in front of the university main gate.

(g) The Ayub Khan Govt. killed sergeant Zohurul Haque in prison on 15 February 1969.

(h) While his requesting, the students doused a parked army jeep with kerosene and set it on fire.

(i) He repeatedly requested the officers, "Please, don't open fire. My students will go back now."

(j) So, a flame of protest spread throughout erstwhile East Pakistan.

25. Young Writer Flattered and Exploited by a Lady Guest

(a) She also convinced the writer to invite her to a luncheon at Foyot's the most expensive

restaurant in Paris.

(b) The writer thought the lady would be young and beautiful.

(c) He was so flattered that he could not say "no" to her request.

(d) She was very shrewd and took seven costly items of food one after another in different pretext.

(e) But she was not so young as he expected and in appearance imposing rather than attractive.

(f) At that time a lady had read one of his books and wrote a letter to him praising very high of it.

(g) When he met the lady after twenty years at the play, he found her overweight and ugly.

(h) Twenty years ago the writer was living in a small apartment in Paris.

(i) He was not well off; he was earning barely enough money to keep his body and soul together.

(j) The writer paid the bill and he had no money left to bear his expenses for the rest of the month.

(b) She is one of the most discussed Jewish victim of Nazi Holocaust of World War II.

(c) He decides to publish the diary to fulfill Anne's wishes.

(d) She gained fame posthumously for her "The Diary of a Young Girl".

(e) At the start of her diary, Anne describes fairly typical girlhood experiences.

(f) Anneliles Marie "Anne" Frank was a German-born diarist.

(g) In this diary she chronicled her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944.

(h) This diary also shows the vivid historical context of her personal thoughts.

(i) After the end of war her father, Otto Frank recovers the book from Miep.

(j) Anne's diary begins on the thirteenth birthday.

27. Migration from Bangladesh to Britain

(a) Since Sylhet had already forged a strong link with the UK, most new labour was drawn from there.

(b) Migration from Bangladesh to Britain started in 1930s and was predominantly a Sylheti

phenomenon.

(c) During the 1950s, the numbers increased dramatically.

(d) They basically migrated for higher education and ultimately settled in the UK.

(e) These men were largely illiterate and belonged to the landless peasantry.

(f) Sylhetis, based in the UK, helped each other to integrate into the new society by providing credit, arranging documents, and gradually spreading the network.

(g) Men of this particular geographical area employed by the British ship companies first started the process of migration.

(h) However, along with people from poorer backgrounds, a small number of urban upper and middle class Bangladeshis also migrated even before the World War II.

(i) After the world War II, due to labour shortages, British government encouraged labour

migration from its former colonies.

(j) The post war British economy demanded cheap and plentiful labour, much of which was

recruited from south Asia.

(a) The blacks were subjected to all sorts of indignities.

(b) Nelson Mandela was the greatest leader not only in South Africa but also in the world.

(c) The Europeans were separated from the non Europeans.

(e) All his life he struggled against apartheid.

(f) But the oppressive rulers could not break his spirit.

(g) The blacks were treated cruelly.

his hands but without apparent harm.

(c) Bangladesh has rich legends and myths.

(d) For example, he could supposedly calm dangerous animals and make them docile.

(e) People of this regions would pray to him for protection.

(f) He also fought crocodiles who threatened the people of a region full of jungle.

(g) Among many myths, myth of Gazi Pir is one.

(h) In fact, some 'Gazir paat scrolls' are part of the collection of the British Museum.

(i) According to some myths and legends, Gazi Pir was a Muslim saint who is said to spread Islam in the Bengal parts close to the Sundarbans.

(j) He is thought to have miraculous power.

34. Nelson Mandela's Historic Struggle Against Apartheid

(a) Mandela became a lawyer and joined ANC that resisted racism.

(b) From his early years, he was deeply shocked at the oppression of the white against the black.

(c) South Africa had a long history of racial discrimination between the white and the black people.

(d) Nelson Mandela appeared as a pioneer to make the black people free.

(e) So, Mandela was charged with treason and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 through a

mock trial.

(f) He united all the black people and struggled against the white govt. to establish their legal right and to stop all discriminations.

(g) At last in 1990, the white govt. was compelled to release him due to international pressure.

(h) But nothing could deviate him from the path of freedom, and his strong determination and great sacrifice inspired the people of the globe.

(i) No head of state at present world can be compared with him, and he has become a living

legend.

(j) Then he as elected president but he also gave us presidency.

35. The Story of Gazi Pir

(a) According to some myths and legends Gazi Pir was a Muslim Saint.

(b) Thus all predatory animals were said to have been kept within bound.

(c) He is seen there riding a Royal Bengal tiger fearlessly.

(h) The amazing works of Gazi Pir are depicted in paats or scroll paintings.

(i) It was a region full of canals and creeks bordering the Bay of Bengal.

(j) It so happened because he remained alert and vigilant.

36. The Emergence of Independent Bangladesh

(a) Yahya Khan declared martial law, banned Awami League and ordered arrest of Sheikh Mujib.

(b) The West Pakistan rulers, however, were completely against Mujib's demand for greater

autonomy.

(c) On April 17, 1971, the first government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was formed and Mujib was made the first President of the country in his absence.

(d) Soon after that Muktibahini was formed and it started strong resistance against the Pak Army.

(e) After nine months of bloody war, Bangladesh became independent and Sheikh Mujib took the charge of reconstructing the war-torn country.

(f) In the general election of Pakistan in 1970, Awami League won on a massive majority under Mujib's leadership.

(g) His party swooped in all but two of East Pakistan's quota of seats in the National Assembly.

(h) In a historic speech at the Racecourse Ground in Dhaka on March 7, 1971, Mujib called for the independence of Bangladesh.

(i) On the night of March 25, 1971, Pak Army launched Operation Searchlight and started large scale genocide of the innocent Bengalis and arrested Sheikh Mujib.
