The Helpless Farmer and the Helpful Nobleman A farmer was taking some sacks of wheat to a mill. The mill was a few kilometres away. On the way, the horse stumbled and one of the sacks fell to the ground. It was too heavy for the farmer to lift and there was nobody around to help him. “If I left it”, thought the farmer, “it would mean a loss.” He was wondering what to do. Meanwhile he saw a horseman coming towards him. His heart jumped. As the rider was coming nearer, the farmer recognised him. It was no other than the nobleman who lived in a great house at the top of the hill. “If I asked a person of his rank for help, he would take it as an insult,” the farmer said to himself. So, he did not think of approaching the rider. The poor man was at a complete loss.
The nobleman was more than a person of title. He was a gentleman. He stopped in front of the farmer and got off the horse. “I see you’ve had a mishap, friend,” said the nobleman. “Fortunately, I have come along just now, for it is difficult to find help in a place like this.”
Then he held one end of the sack and asked the farmer to hold the other hand. Together they lifted the sack and placed it once again on the horse’s back.
The farmer took off his cap and said, “My Lord, how can I thank you?” “You can do that easily, friend,” replied the nobleman, “whenever you see somebody in difficulty, do your best to help him, and that will be thanking me.”

How We Can Help Stop Child Labour
Child labour is a pressing issue that persists in many parts of the world. It deprives the children of their childhood, education, and basic rights. Children should not be engaged in jobs because they deserve the opportunity to attend school and enjoy their childhood. We need to find ways to stop child labour and make sure all children are safe and happy.
One way we can help stop child labour is by making sure all children can go to school. When children are in school, they can learn new things and have a better future. We can also tell adults not to make children work and to treat them kindly.
Another thing we can do is to help families who are very poor. Sometimes, families make their children work because they don't have enough money. It can be impossible to stop child labour because some people think it is okay for children to work. But we can teach them that children should be in school and not in jobs.
In conclusion, stopping child labour is very important so that all children can have a happy and safe childhood. We can stop it by making sure children can go to school, by supporting those families who need help, and by teaching others that child labour is wrong. Together, we can make a world where every child can play and learn without being forced to work.

King Midas and the Golden Touch
Once upon a time, there was a king called Midas. He was extremely fond of gold. Although he had a lot of it, he wanted more. “I wish I had the golden touch,” he said to himself one day, “Then I’d be the happiest man.”
A wise god granted his wish promptly. Half an hour later, as the king was sitting under an apple tree in his garden, suddenly a ripe apple fell beside him. He picked it up. As he touched it, the apple turned to gold. He could hardly believe his eyes. He had not expected his wish to be granted. So, he was overjoyed. Then he touched his chair. He was surprised to see that it turned to gold, too. “Wonderful!” he exclaimed. “I’m the happiest man in the world.”
King Midas, amazed at his golden touch, went back quickly to the palace. As he entered it, his little daughter ran to him and he took her in his arms. Instantly she turned into gold. The king was struck with horror. He put her down at once, thinking that this would make her human again. But there was no change. The king stood staring at his daughter. Then he touched her again. But nothing happened. She continued to be gold. The king cried out in anguish. “I’m terribly sorry,” he said, “I made that wish.” Immediately the wise god took the golden touch away and the girl became human again. The king had learnt an important lesson. There are other things more precious than gold.

Can You Live Alone?
Long ago, a young man who lived in a village, found his life full of problems and sufferings. Quarrels, ill-feelings, jealousy, enmity– all were part of everyday life there.
So, he left his house and went to a jungle to live by himself. There he made a nice little hut with wood, bamboo and reeds. “Ah, how happy I am here!” said the man to himself.
But one day, he found some mice in his hut. The little creatures soon made holes in his blanket. So, he brought a cat to kill the mice. The cat needed milk. So, he brought a cow. The cow needed grass and hay. So, he brought a cowboy.
The cowboy needed food. So, he took a wife to cook meals. Then children were born to them, and the man found himself again in a family.
So, nobody can live alone, unless that person is either angel or devil. People need food, shelter, companions and cooperation. They need to help each other. And if they live in a family or community, their needs can be fulfilled. Hence living in society can make people good and happy citizens.

Amerigo: the Street Child
My name is Amerigo. I’m 13 years old, living alone on the streets. My mother, who is now married to another man, abandoned me. My father lives far away. He hasn’t helped me yet, despite my requests for money to buy a bus ticket to go to him. I’m still waiting...
The streets are my home now. I used to collect trash and sell it to a vendor to earn my bread. But I had to stop doing that after I had a serious infection. A doctor told me to stay away from the trash dump. I also worked for an ice cream shop owner, selling ice cream on the beach, but for that, I didn’t get paid. Instead, the owner gave me food and let me sleep in his hut. The job was tough and painful, as the ice cream box was heavy and I often couldn’t sell any ice cream.
In a way, I'm lucky because I'm still alive. My friends who work sorting rubbish in dumps often suffer from serious diseases. One of them was recently killed after he fell into a hole that opened up in the pile of trash. Many of us work for 10 to 12 hours, and get so little in return that we can't even buy food.
Some street kids shine shoes or work in factories. One boy I know lost an eye from a piece of hot glass at a glass factory. The factory owner didn’t provide medical help or compensation.
For me, like all other children on the street, it is very hard. I'm always hungry, and I don't know where I will sleep the next night. I wish to live in my own home and sleep there in peace. The nights are very cold in the winter. You can die from cold in the street!

Kalim Majhee and His Ferry Boat
Kalim lives in a small village in Bangladesh. By profession, he is a boatman. In Bengali ‘boatman’ implies ‘majhee’. For this, people called him Kalim Majhee. His little boat was the only source of income of his family.
The village and the nearest big bazaar was separated by a river. There sits a big ‘hat’ on every Sunday in the bazaar. The only way to cross the river for the villagers was Kalim Majhee’s ferry boat.
Once in a ‘hat’ day, Kalim Majhee was busy in ferrying. The weather was not as usual. In the evening wind from north end began to blow. The weather was getting worse with black clouds gathering in the sky. Many hat-goers were returning home with their shopping bags, sacks and baskets. Everybody was trying to get into Kalim Majhee’s boat ahead of each other. Kalim Majheee was shouting all the time, “Wait, wait. There are too many of you. My boat can’t carry you all in one trip”. But nobody paid heed to him. They made the boat overcrowded. With so many people on board, the boat sank in the middle of the river.
As the villagers knew how to swim and there was no woman or children in the boat, no one died. People lost their goods in the river. But the most unfortunate man was Kalim Majhee. He lost his only means of livelihood.

River gypsies are an ethnic group in Bangladesh. They are known as bedey to local people. The gypsies have their own lifestyle and culture. They live in groups and do not own any land. Therefore, they live a nomadic life, travelling from one place to another. These people roam across our rivers and waters from May to December in small country boats. These boats are their houses and these people are a part of our waters. In winter, many water bodies dry up. At that time they return to the mainland and live in make-shift tarpaulin tents on open river banks. You can see their men relaxing in the tents. Toddlers play with dogs or other pets in the dust. Women often idle away time by hair doing, picking off lice in twos or threes sitting in a row. Throughout the monsoon, they remain busy with fishing. They also dive for natural pearls in waters. Sometimes, they camp for a couple of weeks. Men catch snakes and entertain people with snake charming and sell herbal cures. Women go from door to door to sell bangles, cosmetics and other things. They also try to heal pains of old people often by sucking out blood from their body.
Many villagers believe in the magical power of the gypsies. They can make an evil spirit leave someone’s body by magic or special powers.

Communication of ideas is at the centre of civilisation. It needs written records. Most of our records in the modern age are on paper. Though writing was invented very early, paper is a more modern invention.
For long in history, people exchanged ideas through speaking and listening. Then there came the art of writing. But to record thoughts in writing was difficult. Writing materials were not available. People used surface of stone, metal, wood, bark, leaves, etc. for writing. Those things were not easy to carry. Then for ages, people looked for easy writing materials. Finally, paper was invented in China in 105 AD. Before the paper age, knowledge was very restricted. Can you think of that time? There were very few books in the world. Maybe, they were written on stone or on heavy wood plunks or on metal sheets. Suppose, one page was a heavy stone block. So, think of a hundred– page book! In our age, you can carry the entire world of knowledge in digital form in your laptop bag. You can even carry a huge volume of paper encyclopedia. But who could produce and carry tons of heavy stone books and documents in those paperless days? In fact, paper has made publication and the spread of knowledge and information easy. So you can see how paper has changed our life.
